Tree Trimming, Risk Checks & Second Opinions in St. Augustine
Jeff Mobley prunes trees so they grow strong and stay safe, and he’ll tell you honestly when a tree doesn’t need to come down. If another company recommended removal, call or text Jeff at 904-540-2167 for a free second opinion before you sign. Quotes, risk checks and consulting are all free.
Pruning that keeps a healthy tree healthy
Good pruning removes dead, crossing and weak limbs and lifts branches off the roof, without stripping the tree. Jeff trims for how the tree will grow over the next several years, which cuts down on emergency calls later.
Jeff’s done this work since 1998, much of it in the tight spaces around St. Augustine’s oldest houses, where there’s little room for equipment and less for mistakes. The same care applies to the big oaks in Jacksonville’s Riverside, Avondale and Ortega neighborhoods.
Every tree trimming job starts with a free quote on site. Jeff walks the property, looks at the trees you're worried about and at what sits underneath them, then tells you what he would cut and what he would leave alone. Nothing gets priced over the phone. The cost depends on the tree's size, how close it sits to the house or a power line, and how much of it has to be rigged down in pieces instead of dropped. On the day of the work, the crew checks the tree for nesting birds before the first cut and hauls the brush off the property when they finish.

Get a free second opinion before a tree comes down
A removal quote is one company’s opinion. Jeff will look at the tree for free, explain what he sees, and tell you whether removal is really needed or whether pruning or simply watching it is the better call. His aim is to keep healthy trees standing whenever that’s safe. Saving a mature tree usually costs less than removing it and protects the shade and value it adds to your lot.
What to have ready: the other company’s written quote or notes, and photos of anything that worried you. You can text them to Jeff ahead of the visit.
Free tree risk assessment: is that limb over your roof a danger?
A risk check is a close look at the specific limbs and trees that could hit a house, garage, driveway or pool cage. Jeff checks the attachment points, the wood, the lean and the target underneath, then tells you what to do first. It’s free.
Free tree consulting for construction and land projects
Building near mature trees is where most avoidable tree losses happen. Trenching, grading and heavy equipment over the roots can kill a tree a year or two after the house is finished. Jeff consults with homeowners, builders and property managers before work starts, marking which trees can stay and how to protect them during construction. There’s no charge for the consultation.
Trimming live oaks in St. Augustine
Most of the mature canopy in this city is live oak, and most of Jeff's trimming work here is on them. University of Florida lists live oak among the species worth planting and keeping. Looked after, one will outlast the house it shades.
Live oaks grow wide before they grow tall. On the small lots near the historic district that means limbs running out over a roof, a neighbor's fence or a coquina wall, with nowhere clear to drop them. Jeff takes those down in sections and rigs them out rather than letting them fall.
What he won't do is strip the inside of the crown to make it look tidy. Pulling out the interior growth and leaving everything bunched at the branch tips puts more weight further out on the limb, which is the opposite of what you want heading into June.
Before any branch comes off, he checks the tree for nesting birds and other wildlife. A healthy live oak near a house is almost always worth keeping. If another company has told you one has to come down, Jeff will look at it free before you commit to anything, call him at 904-540-2167.

Trimming and second-opinion questions
Is a second opinion really free?
Yes. Jeff doesn’t charge for second opinions, risk checks or construction consulting. If the tree does need work, he’ll quote it, and the quote is free too.
How do I know if a tree company is right that my tree needs removal?
Ask for a second opinion from someone who isn’t also quoting the removal. Jeff reviews the tree and the recommendation and tells you whether removal is necessary.
When is the best time to trim trees in St. Augustine, St. Johns and Jacksonville?
Late winter through spring works for most pruning, because the work is done before hurricane season starts June 1.
